Dale and Harry will present a compassionate model of engagement and change that is supported by
theory and research. This view is in contrast to the history of helping those who perpetrate violence that
has often seen confusion between therapy and punishment.
You can expect to learn:
Skillful questions that invite responsibility and compassion
Ways to enhance your working alliance especially with difficult to reach clients
How to manage your own anger, frustration and powerlessness
Methods to assess and respond to risk
How to respond to recurrent violence that can enhance learning and change
Intended audience:
psychologists, therapists, social workers, nurses, alcohol and drug counsellors, probation officers,
group therapists and pastoral counsellors.
Instructional methods:
Demonstration of effective interview skills by Harry and Dale, lecture, case discussion, role-play by
participants. Certificates of attendance will be provided.
Dr. Harry Stefanakis
, registered psychologist, is an experienced counsellor and educator who communicates
effectively with both humour and clarity. Harry has over 15 years experience working with victims and
offenders in the field of family violence and has completed a research project on how men stop using violence
and abuse. Harry has designed several community and institutional programs and has provided supervision and
training in understanding and facilitating the change process in men who use violence. Harry has presented
his work at national and international conferences and training seminars. He was a visiting expert for the
United Nations: Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders and he
is currently the Chair of the Ending Relationship Abuse Society of BC and a working member of the BC
Community Coordination for Women’s Safety Committee.
Dale Trimble, MA, RCC
, is a Canadian pioneer in the work of violence prevention and he co-founded one of
the first treatment groups for violent men in Canada. He has provided training throughout Canada and in the
U.S. Dale was a director and senior therapist of men’s groups for over 25 years. Dale is a founding board
member of the Ending Relationship Abuse Society of BC (formerly ACAM) (1993). Dale has served as a clinical
supervisor and field faculty advisor for graduate students in psychology and social work and is an adjunct
faculty member with City University. He has written, appeared in or produced several training videos on
therapy. In 2004 he received the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors "President’s Award for
Distinguished Contributions to the Profession". Dale is in full time private practice in Vancouver
providing therapy, training and supervision.
