Mary Kean, MA

I'm pleased to introduce my associate Mary Kean. Mary is warm, down-to-earth, skillful and practical in her work with invididuals, couples, young people and families.

I've known Mary nearly as long as the seventeen years she's been in practice in Vancouver. We've worked side by side as co-therapists with families who are in distress.

I refer clients to Mary whose particular needs match her knowledge, experience and skills.

Mary's expertise includes:

  • Women & men in transition (career, relationships to adult parents, blended family concerns, leaving or thinking of leaving an abusive relationship, adoptions)

  • men who struggle with too much anger, or who are searching for a direction in life

  • marital therapy

  • family therapy regarding teen conflict, family life changes and transitions, etc.

Mary's approach to therapy incorporates emotionally focused therapy (EFT), systemic and cognitive behavioural therapy, brief solution-focused, and collaborative therapy.

Mary says about therapy:

When people have a chance to contemplate the nature of their own reality in a emotionally safe environment with a skilled and caring listener, they can find their way quite effectively.

Mary is also a certified professional coach who holds a certificate from the Coaches Institute of California. Mary has coached executives and CEO's who wish to work on their goals, directions and/or performance at work.

Mary says about coaching:

The main idea of coaching is that all champions have a coach. No one just goes out there and wins a gold medal. Coaching is an ancient art actually and deals with the barriers that keep one from realizing all that one can be or do at a certain time in life. The advantage of having a therapist who is a coach is that when the barriers are psychological, the coach can work with those aspects as well - then it becomes therapeutic coaching.

Mary's credentials include
  • MA – University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill

  • Former editor of The Journal of Collaborative Therapies

  • Recipient - BC Association of Clinical Counselors Communications Award

  • Published in the Journal of Systemic Therapies, The Canadian Journal of Counselling and Journal of Collaborative Therapies

  • Adjunct faculty in the City University, Masters in Counselling Psychology program
